Pennine Singers Summer Concert – ‘Prayer and Praises’
Saturday 4th July, 7.30pm, St Paul’s Church, Huddersfield Road, Stalybridge
Come with us on a journey of prayer and praises through the ages, mixing quiet reflection and joyous celebration!
Our programme features Schubert’s sunny Mass in G from the Eucharist service, and Stanford’s serene Evening Service in G, traditionally sung at evensong.
We’re excited to perform a new work by Pennine Singers founder and former musical director Jack Pickford. Plus a wonderful Dan Forrest arrangement of And Can it Be, originally a hymn by Charles Wesley.
The concert also features the beautiful plainsong of Hildegard of Bingen, the earliest recorded female composer to have works surviving today, and a luminous arrangement of the same text, based on the Hildegard Chant, by Ola Gjeilo.
We’ll (we hope!) get our lips and larynxes round a real tongue twister of a piece; Trotta’s fabulous setting of Psalm 150 – Laudate Dominum – which praises God with the sounding of the trumpet, the harp and lyre, timbrel and dancing, strings and pipe, and clash of resounding cymbals. We look forward to sharing this exciting piece with you!
In complete contrast, our upper voices will sing Holst’s gorgeous Ave Maria which features wonderful eight-part double choir writing for soprano and alto voices.
Also in eight parts, we’ll share Orlando Gibbons’ joyful O Clap Your Hands Together, an intricate and beautiful work from the English Renaissance.
Tickets are £10 (under 18s free) and can be bought on the door. Light refreshments will be available in the interval. There is ample free parking behind the church.
