At the centre of our Advent journey is Benjamin Britten’s wonderful A Ceremony of Carols for choir, soloists and harp. The work is a collection of twelve exquisite and varied movements, ranging from gentle lullaby to festive celebration, and from reverent reflection to fiery hellraiser. The texts (a mix of English, Latin and Middle English), each focus on different aspects of the birth of Christ. A Ceremony of Carols captures the essence of Christmas and is an absolute treat to sing and to listen to – not to be missed!
The programme also features works from the Renaissance to the present day, on the theme of advent, light, reverence and joy. You’ll hear familiar Christmas favourites such as the traditional carols In Dulci Jubilo and Gaudete, plus Macmillan’s stunning O Radiant Dawn and Peter Warlock’s moving Bethlehem Down. Also featured are much loved works by composers through the ages, from Sweelinck and Tallis, to Lauridsen and Whitacre.
The concert will be a perfect preparation for Christmas, transporting us all on a journey through quiet reflection and festive joy.
Hot drinks (including mulled cordial) and festive light refreshments will be available in the interval. Tickets are priced at £10 and are available on the door (under 18s go free) – no need to book in advance.
We look forward to welcoming you!
